What’s happening?

T&T people are great at celebrating Carnival and the achievements of their top sports stars. But there has been a bit of a vacuum when it comes to celebrating the culture and traditions of the people and the national and global achievements of non-sports people.

Why is this important?

It is all about the heart and soul of the country, of focussing on the many pluses the country has to offer rather than the negatives which we read about daily in the country’s newspapers. For a country of just 1.3 million people, there is a huge amount to celebrate.

What is there to celebrate?

A great deal! Rubadiri Victor is passionate about T&T’s culture and achievements. In 2004 he published the first edition of a fantastic magazine called 'Generation Lion'. Within its 312 pages are stories about:

  • A range of successful musicians of various genres
  • Various actors and theatre groups
  • Nineteen sports stars
  • A number of activists who have a high profile passion for specific causes
  • Three comedians
  • Three beauty queens
  • Six unique business entrepreneurs
  • Seven artists and
  • One film maker

And all of them were under 35!

So what happens next?

Rubadiri and a team of thirty-five photographers and writers are just about to publish a second edition of the 'Generation Lion'. This one will be almost 50% larger than the first edition. We have seen the layout and content. It is truly mind-blowing and full of fantastic photographs and stories about an even greater number of T&T heroes who help make the country the unique place it is.

What does this mean for T&T?

To move to a developed nation status, the people of T&T need to celebrate a lot more about what people in society and the country have achieved at home and abroad. There are ‘Soca Warriors’ in every field of endeavour - not just sports. The first print run of the new ‘Generation Lion’ will be just 3000 copies. It is something special that every person who has a passion about T&T should read and treasure. It’s about all the good things the country has and should celebrate. And that’s important for the future!

Key question: How can we shift our energy towards celebrating our achievements rather than complaining about all the things that are wrong with our country?
